The message for this year's FIRE PREVENTION WEEK is "Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat". More fires start in the kitchen than any other part of the home. Learn more at www.firepreventionweek.org .
Woodstock Fire Department will be visiting the Woodstock Elementary School on Wednesday, October 18th. This year we'll have the Fire Safety trailer.
Don't forget to check your smoke detectors for operation by using the TEST button, and change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks in the Spring and Fall. If you don't have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen - GO BUY ONE TODAY. If you do have one, make sure you know how to use it BEFORE you need to, and check that it hasn't expired (most have an indicator dial that will show if the unit is still adequately charged).
Here's a few quick facts...
- Between 1999-2002, there were 114,000 reported home fires associated with cooking equipment on average per year, resulting in an annual 290 deaths and 4,380 injuries.
- Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires.
- Three in 10 reported home fires start in the kitchen -- more than any other place in the home.
- Two out of three reported home cooking fires start with the range or stove.
- Electric ranges or stoves have a higher risk of fires, injuries and property damage, compared to gas ranges or stoves, but gas ranges or stoves have a higher risk of fire deaths.
